Moisture is the most common cause of 3D printing failure in tropical climates. PLA filament absorbs 0.5-0.8% moisture by weight after 24 hours at 80% relative humidity. PETG absorbs 0.2-0.3%, and nylon can absorb 2-3% in the same conditions. For Southeast Asian users and European summer storage, proper drying and packaging are essential.
Moisture Absorption Rates by Material
PLA reaches saturation (0.8% moisture) in 3-4 days at 85% RH and 30°C. PETG reaches saturation (0.3%) in 5-7 days. ABS absorbs slowly (0.2-0.4% over weeks) but the moisture causes surface pitting and popping sounds during printing. Nylon PA6 can absorb 3% moisture in 24 hours — it must be printed directly from a dry box or dried immediately before use.

Drying Equipment and Parameters
Use a filament dryer with forced air circulation, not a food dehydrator. Recommended drying parameters: PLA at 50-55°C for 4-6 hours, PETG at 65-70°C for 4-5 hours, ABS at 80-85°C for 3-4 hours, nylon at 80-90°C for 8-12 hours. Do not exceed these temperatures — PLA softens at 60°C and spools deform.

Storage Solutions for High Humidity
Store opened filament in airtight containers with reusable silica gel beads. Replace or regenerate beads when the indicator turns from blue to pink.
